Transport and Technology – past, present and future
Transport is fundamental to all our lives, getting from A to B, by land sea or air; but there is a huge revolution taking place. The last transport revolution saw the horse and carriage and supporting trades and activities disappear. The motor car and the internal combustion engine (ICE) took over, with petrol stations, garages, metalled roads, and massive change. Now, electric and other power sources are replacing ICE. In come batteries, charging points, hydrogen systems, a proliferation of new technologies and materials, and supporting activities. Past, present and future revolutions impact all our lives, and provide a fascinating topic to delve into, learn about and debate.
At the monthly meetings of the Transport Group, there are three alternative themes - past, present and future. A topic is selected for the meeting’s theme. For instance, we might be looking at steam engines, next month current challenges for the motor industry, followed by electric vehicle development.
Topics are chosen by group members, who may give a presentation on a topic of particular interest to them.
In order to draw on a wider range of expertise and knowledge, we link in with members at other u3a groups, via a Zoom screen at our meetings. Specialists from research universities, commerce and industry are invited to speak on a topic, with Q and A., and discussion with those linked in on Zoom. Site visits are also organised followed by lunch.
The aim is to draw on the knowledge and experience of group members, other u3a members and outside specialists, with lively exchanges and importantly, to have stimulating time!
